Under the industry's Motor Claims Framework, every accident must be reported to your insurer within 24 hours or by the next working day, with the vehicle, even if there is no visible damage (GIA MCF). Do I need to report an accident if there is no damage?
Yes. The framework says all accidents must be reported within 24 hours or by the next working day, even with no visible damage and even after a private settlement, because the other party can still claim later.
What happens if I do not report in time?
Your insurer may refuse to cover the accident, your No Claims Discount can be reduced at renewal, and the insurer may cancel or decline to renew the policy.
Should I use the tow truck that turns up at the scene?
The framework's advice is to avoid unauthorised tow trucks and workshops and to call your insurer's hotline for towing instead.
