# Will an Independent Workshop Void My Car Warranty in Singapore?

Updated 2026-10-11 · Wrenchmap

Short answer: No, not on that ground alone. After the 2017 car parts market inquiry, major dealers amended warranty terms that let them reject claims just because an independent workshop serviced the car. A dealer can still reject a claim where the third-party work caused the defect, scheduled servicing was missed, or non-spec or modified parts were used. Keep dated invoices.

## What changed in 2017

The Competition Commission of Singapore’s car parts market inquiry, concluded in December 2017, found that warranty terms tying coverage to the dealer’s own workshops deterred car owners from using third-party workshops , weakening competition. Nine major dealers agreed to amend their terms, applying the change to existing and new warranties ([CCCS, 2017](https://www.cccs.gov.sg/media-and-publications/media-releases/major-car-dealers-amend-warranty-terms)).

## The 2024 reminder

In July 2024 the regulator, now the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore, said it still received a small number of reports of dealers imposing these restrictions, and asked all dealers, parallel importers included, to remove them from websites, marketing and legal documents ([CCCS, 22 July 2024](https://www.ccs.gov.sg/media-and-consultation/newsroom/media-releases/cccs-reminds-car-dealers-to-remove-warranty-restrictions-22-jul-24)).

## What a dealer can and cannot do

A dealer can A dealer cannot
Recommend its own workshops and promote their merits Require servicing exclusively at its workshops to keep the warranty valid
Reject a claim for a defect caused by third-party work Reject a claim solely because a third-party workshop serviced the car
Reject a claim where scheduled servicing was missed Mislead you about your warranty rights
Reject claims involving third-party replacement or modified parts Cast aspersions on independent workshops’ capability

## How to keep your warranty safe at an independent workshop

- Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for mileage and time.

- Use parts and fluids that meet spec, and have them named on the invoice.

- Keep every dated invoice with the mileage. CCCS advises consumers to safekeep this documentation to avoid disputes.

- Read the warranty terms before you buy and ask the dealer to clarify anything unclear.

## Why it matters for your wallet

Independent workshops generally price servicing below dealer service centres; published Singapore figures put a minor service at an independent at around S$100 to S$200, with dealers higher (see [servicing costs](/guide/car-servicing-cost-singapore/)). Over the life of a warranty that difference adds up.

## More questions

What should I keep as proof? +
Dated invoices that list the work done, the mileage and the parts used, plus the service book stamp if you have one. CCCS advises consumers to safekeep this documentation. My dealer says I must service with them to keep the warranty. Is that allowed? +
CCCS has told dealers to remove such restrictions and warned that misleading consumers about their warranty rights may be an unfair practice under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act. Do I have to use genuine parts? +
Dealers may reject claims involving third-party replacement or modified parts, so use parts that meet the manufacturer's specification and keep the details on the invoice. [Find a workshopCar servicing90 workshops listed](/service/car-servicing/)
